Cottonwood Institute is thrilled to introduce our new Youth Mental Health Advisor, Whitney Thompson. As Cottonwood grows, we increasingly realize the importance of having a robust mental health support system for our students as well as excellent training programs for instructors heading into the field.
Whitney will be a resource for Cottonwood to better serve our students and continue to create a psychologically safe program environment. A licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, Whitney is the owner and founder of Anchor Counseling Centers. Read more about Whitney below!
How did you find Cottonwood Institute and what inspired you to join the advisory board?
One of my great friends, Kat (of Backcountry Pulse), told me that you were looking for a Youth Mental Health Advisor and it was a perfect fit for me! I am super excited to support a team of passionate people who want to give back to the community. Anchor Counseling Centers is also a 1% For the Planet, like Cottonwood!
What do you do outside of Cottonwood?
My husband, myself, and our yellow lab Bodhi live in our condo in Frisco, CO most of the time. When we are not here, we are traveling in our conversion van, visiting family on the east coast and always trying to enjoy the outdoors.
Why is exploring the outdoors important to you?
The outdoors have become a very important part of my life as I have become an adult. It provides a place to be calm, reflect, and challenge me physically and mentally. I can’t imagine a life without access to the outdoors, and I am honored to be part of CI who can provide that to students.
How do you like to get outside these days? What else do you like to do for fun?
We try to do anything we can outside (even if it is cold or raining!)! My husband and I are getting into backcountry splitboarding and Bodhi loves to come along. We love to hike, mountain bike, and generally explore any new (or old) outdoor area. We also love a good boat ride and fun in the sun!
What’s an unusual skill people might not know you have? Or a fun fact?
My husband always tells me I am the best listener, which he thinks is a great skill, but I think I am better at talking!
We’re excited to work with you, Whitney!
