Exploring the Outdoors: Our First Adventure with Longmont Youth Center

Summer fun and learning: a new partnership begins. Written by CI Instructor Erin Angel.

The Longmont Youth Center Overnight Camping Program group poses for a pictureDuring the dog days of summer, Cottonwood Institute embarked on an exciting new venture: our first-ever trip with the Longmont Youth Center. This adventure was the perfect blend of learning, fun, and exploration, setting the stage for what we hope will be a long and rewarding partnership.

The journey began a week prior with a lively get-to-know-you session. The participants, bubbling with enthusiasm, engaged in games and a relay race designed to teach them the essentials of camping. This pre-trip preparation was more than just an icebreaker; it was an introduction to the skills and knowledge they’d need for our outdoor adventure.

On the day of the trip, anticipation was high as we loaded up the vans and headed into the mountains. Upon arrival, the students dove right into the task of setting up tents, creating their cozy home away from home amidst the towering trees and fresh mountain air.

After a hearty lunch, we set off on a hike. The trail offered a wealth of learning opportunities: we identified wildflowers, discovered animal tracks, and engaged in a game of camouflage, sharpening our observation skills in the natural world.

Back at the campsite, free-choice time allowed for individual exploration and learning. Some students mastered the art of safely using a knife to whittle sticks, while others enjoyed some ultra-competitive games of gaga ball. As the sun set, we gathered around for a delicious carne asada taco dinner, which set the stage for an evening of campfire fun.

Learning to build fires was a highlight, followed by roasting marshmallows and popping popcorn over the flames. We taught the students how to make sure a campfire is properly out (so important!) before setting out on a night hike, where we marveled at shooting stars and embraced the tranquil night sky before settling down for a well-deserved rest.

The following day was filled with joy and creativity. We played wack games like Waterbottle Shoe, which had everyone in fits of laughter, before diving into a photovoice project. Armed with cameras, the students captured their experiences and reflections, offering a personal glimpse into their adventure.

As the trip came to a close, our tired but happy group made their way back to the Longmont Youth Center. The positive feedback and the memories created leave us eagerly anticipating next year’s program. We look forward to building on this successful start and nurturing a lasting relationship with Longmont Youth Center. What a fantastic beginning to what we hope will be many more adventures together to come!
