From Gaga Ball to Stargazing: A Memorable Overnight at Cheley Camps. Written by CI Field Instructor Kira Taggart.
After a late start to the school day, Angevine Middle School (AMS) students headed out on their overnight to Cheley Camps near Estes Park! It was a beautiful day, and we stopped along the St. Vrain River to eat some packed lunches and throw some rocks in the river.
It was a fun and challenging time setting up camp, making sure we were considering safety concerns (like keeping our food in bear-proof containers) and setting up tents. By the time we finished settling in, it was pretty far into the afternoon, so Erin knew what the students needed next: Gaga Ball! The students jumped right into several lively and spirited rounds of Gaga Ball. Then, some students split off to learn outdoor skills. They had the choice of fire building, whittling, or continuing to play Gaga Ball.
For dinner, we feasted on burrito bowls, and the cooking group set out a fabulous spread of toppings. Bellies full of yummy food, it was time to get warm around the fire and eat s’mores. Some told silly stories and others played telephone around the fire. However, everyone was excited for the next part of the night, the night hike. In the darkness, we walked down the trail and did some science experiments that can only be done in the dark. We also found an absolutely beautiful spot for stargazing – it was such a clear night!
In the morning, frost covered the benches, and many spoke of cold nights of sleep. Spirits were quickly lifted with lots of hot chocolate and oatmeal yogurt parfaits for breakfast! After packing up camp, we hiked up to an incredible view of Mt. Meeker and Longs Peak.
Along the way, we found moose and elk tracks, juniper berries, and a very curious dog who followed us all the way down. We also stopped for a few rounds of Camouflage. When we got to the top, the students spread out for a sit spot with a view of the mountains for some reflection time before the trip ended. We ate lunch there and shared our appreciation for the other people on the trip. It was a great end to the AMS overnight!
Después de un comienzo tardío del día escolar, los estudiantes de Angevine Middle School (AMS) se dirigieron a pasar la noche a Cheley Camps, cerca de Estes Park. Fue un día hermoso, y nos detuvimos a lo largo del río St. Vrain para comer algunos almuerzos para llevar y tirar algunas piedras en el río.
Fue divertido y difícil montar el campamento, asegurarnos de que teníamos en cuenta las cuestiones de seguridad (como guardar la comida en recipientes a prueba de osos) y montar las tiendas. Cuando terminamos de instalarnos, la tarde ya estaba bastante avanzada, así que Erin sabía qué era lo siguiente que necesitaban los alumnos: ¡Gaga Ball! Podían elegir entre hacer fuego, tallar o seguir jugando al gaga ball. Para cenar, nos dimos un festín de burritos, y el grupo de cocina preparó una fabulosa variedad de ingredientes. Con las barrigas llenas de deliciosa comida, llegó el momento de calentarse alrededor del fuego y comer malvaviscos. Algunos contaron historias tontas y otros jugaron al teléfono alrededor del fuego. Sin embargo, todos estaban entusiasmados con la siguiente parte de la noche, la excursión nocturna. En la oscuridad, bajamos por el sendero e hicimos algunos experimentos científicos que sólo se pueden hacer en la oscuridad. También encontramos un lugar precioso para observar las estrellas, ¡era una noche tan clara!
Por la mañana, la escarcha cubría los bancos, y muchos hablaron de noches frías de sueño. Los ánimos se levantaron rápidamente con un montón de chocolate caliente y parfaits de yogur y avena para desayunar. Después de recoger el campamento, subimos hasta una vista increíble del monte Meeker y el pico Longs. Por el camino, encontramos huellas de alces y alces, bayas de enebro y un perro muy curioso que nos siguió durante todo el descenso. También nos detuvimos para hacer unas cuantas rondas de Camuflaje. Cuando llegamos a la cima, los alumnos se sentaron en un lugar con vistas a las montañas para reflexionar antes de terminar la excursión. Almorzamos allí y compartimos nuestro aprecio por las demás personas del viaje. Fue un gran final para la noche de la AMS.
