A Solstice Hiking Adventure with Cottonwood Alumni: Reconnecting and Making Magical Memories

The Winter Solstice Offered a Unique Opportunity for Connection. Written by Senior CAP Instructor Erin Angel.

Two alums enjoying a laugh along the trail on the solstice hike.On the evening of the Winter Solstice, a group of old friends who had scattered off to college, jobs and internships gathered in the forest in the mountains above Boulder. Some of our Alumni hadn’t seen each other for four years, and some met for the first time. We broke the ice as we hiked in the snow and played games we remembered from our Community Adventure Program (CAP) and Changemaker days. Along the way, we shared stories, reminisced about past adventures, and enjoyed the camaraderie that had formed over the years. It was a reminder of the lasting bonds forged in the wilderness, bonds that only grow stronger with time. Soon we were talking and laughing as if no time had passed.

There was something magical about being in the wilderness during the solstice. The stillness and quiet of the season seemed to enhance the experience as we centered ourselves after the sunset with sit spots. The crisp air filled our lungs as we reconnected with the nature around us. We welcomed the longest night with a drum circle and a fire. We celebrated with bread cooked on sticks over the fire and wassail made with fruit, spices, and pine needles and juniper gathered along the trail.

Students gather around a campfire on the alumni solstice hike.As the fire burned low and the stars twinkled overhead, we reluctantly packed up our belongings and made our way back down the trail. The solstice hike with Cottonwood Alumni was a reminder that, no matter how much time passes, the spirit of connection with old friends and Mother Nature remains a vital part of our lives. It was a night filled with laughter, tradition, and magic.  It was a perfect way to embrace the winter season and usher in the new year with warmth, friendship, and joy.
