Quote for September 7, 2007

“The longer I live the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break an organization…a school…a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past…We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have. And that is our attitude…I am convinced life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you…” –Charles Swindoll

I agree with the author, Charles Swindoll, that attitude is the most important ingredient to a happy and successful life. When you focus on attitude, you get to choose how to live your life. Nobody else chooses for you. Having control over one’s life is the highest form of living. Being able to choose how to respond to any situation is the ultimate form of control.

The interesting thing to think about here is the difference between attitude and personality, because attitude is something that varies a lot more and so wouldn’t define you as a person. But that might be the point, that attitude is an easier thing to change short-term. And maybe that can lead to a change in personality? I don’t know, what is personality? Is it just a long-term attitude? Because it definitely is something that changes, only not so often, quickly, or easily as your attitude. Personality, I think, are the general behavioral characteristics of someone. But attitude also really affects how you behave in the moment. Hmm…

So, what’s the journal entry for this week? I got on the website because I might not be able to use the computer tomorrow night to do it. So if I don’t reply tomorrow, you have been forewarned.

It is true, most of the time us humans spend about 90% of the time complaining about something and 10% of the time actually taking action. With a bad attitude like that, how is anyone going to get anything done?
I agree with this quote, I think it is something we can all practice- taking action.
If one wants change, they should set an example of that change.
And yes, we can’t make anyone do this but we can certainly hope they will.
