From Gaga Ball to Topographic Maps: A Fall Adventure in Colorado’s Tahosa Valley. Written by CI Field Instructor Caroline Paul.
Aurora’s 8th grade CAP class from AXL Academy had a “gagaful” time on their overnight camping trip at Cheley Outpost in Allenspark. Nestled in the Tahosa Valley, Cheley Outpost offers breathtaking views, a gaga ball pit, and two beautiful creeks. With the Aspens at peak color, it was no surprise that a returning student, Dezi, took over as class photographer. There is no shortage of pictures to remember their trip by!
After setting up their tents, students wandered down to the gaga ball pit, where they enjoyed endless gaga ball and volleyball, and some even tried their hand at pine-needle basket weaving.
With the setting sun, students cooked themselves some delicious gourmet Maruchan Ramen Noodles and s’mores around the campfire. These teens were tired and called it an early night.
The early night led to an early morning where a handful of students awoke to turkeys wandering around their tent area! While instructors got students up and packing, another seasoned CAP student, Zarius, whipped up a scrumptious breakfast of oatmeal and French toast.
For their last big activity, teens learned how to read topographic maps and then put their skills to the test on a scavenger hunt. Students explored the area, identifying different land features while searching for hidden brownie treats.
The camping trip at Cheley Outpost gave the students a chance to bond, learn new skills, and enjoy the great outdoors. It was a valuable experience they won’t soon forget!
