The students in the Centaurus High School Fall 2022 CAP class are a very diverse group. About ¾ of the students are newcomers to the United States, bringing with them rich and varied experiences. As we studied water in Colorado, we took some time to watch The Story of Bottled Water and talk about drinking water quality. In a class of 18 students, only two families drink tap water, the other families purchased bottled water for all their drinking water. What would it take for these students to trust the quality of Lafayette tap water?
First we watched videos on our watershed and the methods our municipal water provider uses to purify the water. After that we wanted to make certain that the water pipes going to our homes and school were not contaminated. We started by testing the various drinking fountains and taps in the high school. The students got familiar with using the tests and interpreting the results. After that, students were ready to take home test kits and test the water at their own homes.
We finished up our project by visiting the City of Lafayette Municipal Water Treatment Plant. There, we learned about the huge amount of water that gets treated each day. The water comes directly from the mountains and the largest use of the water is to irrigate grass each summer. The water is tested every two seconds for turbidity and then goes through the flocculation process, which further cleans the water by removing particles that are so small that they don’t settle out of the water by themselves. After actually seeing the process with their own eyes, the students were asked how many of them felt that they could safely drink tap water. All of them said yes! They also learned that most of the bottled water that is sold actually comes from the tap, too, so they came to the conclusion that it wasn’t smart consumerism to buy bottled water. A big bonus of our project was learning about careers in water treatment. The students were so excited to find that they could have a secure job helping the planet without necessarily getting a college degree. A win for the students and a win for our planet!
Los estudiantes de la clase de otoño 2022 CAP de la Escuela Secundaria Centaurus son un grupo muy diverso. Alrededor de ¾ de los estudiantes son recién llegados a los Estados Unidos, trayendo consigo experiencias ricas y variadas. Mientras estudiábamos el agua en Colorado, nos tomamos un tiempo para ver The Story of Bottled Water y hablar sobre la calidad del agua potable. En una clase de 18 alumnos, sólo dos familias beben agua del grifo, las otras familias compran agua embotellada para toda su agua potable. ¿Qué haría falta para que estos alumnos confiaran en la calidad del agua del grifo de Lafayette?
Primero vimos vídeos sobre nuestra cuenca hidrográfica y los métodos que utiliza nuestro proveedor municipal de agua para purificarla. Después quisimos asegurarnos de que las tuberías de agua que van a nuestras casas y al colegio no estaban contaminadas. Empezamos analizando las distintas bebederos y grifos del instituto. Los alumnos se familiarizaron con el uso de las pruebas y la interpretación de los resultados. Así, los alumnos se prepararon para llevarse a casa los kits de análisis y analizar el agua en sus propios hogares.
Terminamos nuestro proyecto visitando la planta municipal de tratamiento de aguas de Lafayette. Allí conocimos la enorme cantidad de agua que se trata cada día. El agua viene directamente de las montañas y el mayor uso que se le da es para regar el césped cada verano. Cada dos segundos se comprueba la turbidez del agua y luego se somete al proceso de floculación, que limpia aún más el agua eliminando partículas tan pequeñas que no se asientan por sí solas. Después de ver el proceso con sus propios ojos, le preguntamos a los alumnos cuántos de ellos pensaban que podían beber agua del grifo sin peligro. Todos dijeron que sí. También aprendieron que la mayor parte del agua embotellada que se vende también procede del grifo, por lo que llegaron a la conclusión de que comprar agua embotellada no es consumismo inteligente. Una gran ventaja de nuestro proyecto fue aprender sobre las profesiones relacionadas con el tratamiento del agua. A los alumnos les entusiasmó descubrir que podían tener un trabajo seguro ayudando al planeta sin tener que obtener necesariamente un título universitario. ¡Una victoria para los estudiantes y una victoria para nuestro planeta!
