Changemakers began our first overnight of the 2022-23 season with service to the environment. We joined Wildlands Restoration Volunteers in replanting willows in an area that had been affected by the Cameron Peak wildfire. With every willow tree we planted, we reduced erosion and water contamination. We were such amazing willow-planters that we planted double the acreage than was planned. Way to go Changemakers!
After spending the cool autumn day planting trees, it was time to find our campsite and have some fun. We arrived at the nearby Ben Delatour Scout Ranch in the early evening. We stopped at the museum to learn some history of the area and get our bearings. We were the only people camping on the giant property and had our pick of campsites. We pitched some tents, chopped some veggies, built a campfire and feasted on foil pocket dinners and banana boats. Delish! We enjoyed conversation around the campfire. While most students were exhausted and turned into their sleeping bags for some well deserved rest, a few of us still wanted to squeeze a little more adventure out of the day. We headed out with our headlamps to explore the “Spooky Cat-Eye Trail” to an old gravesite. As is was just before Halloween, we were appropriately spooked.
We enjoyed a lazy breakfast in the morning followed by packing up our tents. Chelsea led an in-depth fire making clinic where students were challenged to make palm-sized one match fires. Each person lit their fire while we all watched and learned from each others’ techniques. We finished that up with a larger fire where we learned to make burn spoons, which was super gratifying and fun.
We ended the day with a couple of games of camouflage. There is never enough time to play as much camouflage as we want to! We loaded up the van and scurried back to meet the parents at our respective schools. What a rewarding way to spend an Autumn weekend!
Los Changemakers empezamos nuestra primera noche de la temporada 2022-23 con un servicio al medio ambiente. Nos unimos a Wildlands Restoration Volunteers para replantar una zona que se había visto afectada por el incendio forestal de Cameron Peak. Con cada sauce que plantamos, redujimos la erosión y la contaminación del agua. Fuimos unos plantadores de árboles tan increíbles que plantamos el doble de la superficie prevista. ¡Así se hace, Changemakers!
Después de pasar el fresco día de otoño plantando árboles, llegó el momento de encontrar nuestro campamento y divertirnos. Llegamos al cercano Rancho Scout Ben Delatour temprano en la tarde. Paramos en el museo para conocer la historia de la zona y orientarnos. Fuimos los únicos que acampamos en la gigantesca propiedad y tuvimos donde elegir. Montamos tiendas, cortamos verduras, encendimos una hoguera y nos dimos un festín con cenas tipo foil pocket y barquitos de plátano. ¡Delicioso!. Disfrutamos de la conversación alrededor de la hoguera. Aunque la mayoría de los estudiantes estaban agotados y se metieron en sus sacos de dormir para un merecido descanso, algunos de nosotros todavía queríamos exprimir un poco más la aventura del día. Salimos con nuestras linternas frontales a explorar el “Espeluznante Sendero del Ojo de Gato” hasta una antigua tumba. Como era justo antes de Halloween, nos asustamos como es debido.
Por la mañana desayunamos tranquilamente y recogimos las tiendas. Chelsea lideró un taller a profundidad sobre cómo hacer fuego en el que los alumnos tuvieron que encender fuegos del tamaño de la palma de la mano con solo una cerilla. Cada uno encendió su fuego mientras todos observábamos y aprendíamos de las técnicas de los demás. Terminamos con un fuego más grande en el que aprendimos a hacer cucharas quemadoras, lo que fue muy gratificante y divertido.
Terminamos el día con un par de juegos de camuflaje. ¡Nunca hay tiempo suficiente para jugar a tanto camuflaje como quisiéramos! Cargamos la furgoneta y nos apresuramos a reunirnos con los padres en nuestros respectivos colegios. ¡Qué manera tan gratificante de pasar un fin de semana otoñal!
